For years, rumors have swirled that director Zack Snyder had his own extended cut of The Justice League that was completely different from what fans saw in the theaters. Now, not only has the existence of this cut been confirmed, but it’s coming to HBO Max in 2021.
According to Page Six, HBO announced this week that Snyder’s long-rumored cut of the DC film will be part of the new streaming platform because they are looking to add content that makes the new service stand out from the competition.

The story of the Snyder cut started to make its way through the internet not long after he was forced to leave his role as the Justice League director due to the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon took over the project that featured Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), but only about 25 percent of the footage Snyder shot remained in the film.
Whedon completely changed the story, and he was also responsible for the infamous reshoots that featured Henry Cavill and his CGI-driven lack of facial hair. Critics bashed the final film from Whedon, and fans were vocal about their disappointment.
Eventually, the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut started to appear on social media. Fans were convinced that Snyder’s version of the film was much better, even though they never saw the footage. But, Whedon’s Justice League was so bad that fans were convinced that Snyder’s version had to be better.

This opinion seems to ignore the fact that Snyder’s other DC projects – Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – were also huge disappointments. Thanks to the high standard set by Marvel, DC doesn’t seem to have a prayer in the world of comic book movies.

But, that could all change next year when the Snyder Cut makes its way to HBO Max. The format of the Snyder Cut is still up in the air – it’s not clear if it will be a four-hour movie or a mini-series. No matter which route they take, The Hollywood Reporter claims that it will cost another $20 million for the new cut and added effects.
